If you like talking to people and have a passion for wildlife, this could be the opportunity for you!
Frequently asked questions:
What will I be doing?
ZooAides perform a variety of tasks throughout the Zoo. Among other duties, they talk to the public about different Zoo animals, help in the Children’s Zoo, assist our Wings of Flight Show staff, clean public areas and work with the ZooKids classes (for preschool age children). The most important part of the ZooAide’s job is to help Zoo guests feel welcome.
I have other obligations this summer, how often do I need to volunteer?
A ZooAide must volunteer a minimum of 56 hours (8 full days) during the months of June through August.
A typical summer day ranges from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. During the summer, the program runs every day of the week (Sunday through Saturday).
ZooAides are responsible for scheduling their own volunteer hours. Once accepted into the program, teens can select which dates they are available to volunteer. Volunteers sign up for their dates up to two weeks in advance.
The schedule is flexible and they have the ability to schedule their hours around outside activities and vacations. Once signed up for a date, ZooAides are expected to volunteer.
How do I apply?
Applications become available in January. Applicants are interviewed in April and May. Admission into the program is highly competitive.
If you would like us to mail an application to you, just send us an email with your name and mailing address (don’t forget your zip code!).
What qualities do you look for in an applicant?
We are looking for applicants who are motivated and enthusiastic. Since a majority of the ZooAide’s day involves talking with Zoo guests, the ability to speak with the public is a must! We also recommend that applicants take the initiative to maintain contact with us. We want to make sure this is something YOU are interested in!
Applicants should be aware that animal contact is limited.
