African Lion

Latin Name:Panthera leo
Category:Mammals
Fun Facts:
  • The lion’s scientific name is Panthera leo
  • A male lion weighs from 330 to 550 pounds.  A female lion weighs between 260 to 400 pounds.
  • A male lion’s head and body are around 5 1/2 to eight feet long, and its tail is another three to 3 1/2 feet long.  A female lion’s head and body are around 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 feet long, and its tail is another two to three feet long.
  • Only male lions have manes.  Usually, the darker the mane of a lion, the older he is.
  • Lions are meat eaters and will eat something as small as an insect and as large as a giraffe.
  • A group of lions is called a pride.  It can have from two to 40 members, but usually the number is around 10 to 13.  Most of the pride are related females—mothers, grandmothers, sisters and aunts.  The male members of the pride tend to change as they compete for leadership of the pride.
  • Females do most of the hunting for the pride.  They normally hunt at night in a group, with one lion making the kill.
  • Lions do not chew their food.  They swallow it in chunks.
  • Every human has a unique set of fingerprints.  You can tell individual lions apart by the number and pattern of their whisker spots.
  • Only the lion, tiger, leopard and jaguar can roar.  This is made possible by a special type of hyoid bone in their throats.
  • A lion’s roar can be heard up to five miles away.

Information:

Some days a male lion really does seem to be king.  A pride, or group, of lions usually has only one or two adult male lions who serve as leaders.  These males tend to be brothers.  Even though female lions do most of the hunting, the males eat first. They are also big enough to steal food from other animals like hyenas.  The male leaders protect the pride and decide where their territory will be.  If they are strong enough to take over as leaders of a pride, they will kill the cubs of other male lions and father their own cubs.

Other days it’s a tough life to be a male lion.  When a male lion is about three years old, he is forced to leave the pride and live on his own until he is strong enough to create or take over a pride himself.  Some lions remain alone throughout their lives.  This is a very difficult life because it is much harder for a lion to hunt and protect itself on its own.  Usually, a male lion can only stay the leader of a pride for about two years before he is driven away or killed and the pride is taken over by another lion.

Though a young, old, injured or sick lion may become the prey of a hyena, a healthy adult lion has no natural predators other than man.
