Powell, OH – The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is proud to announce on June 15, 2011 Jack Hanna was honored as one of the National Wildlife Federation’s (NWF) “Wildlife Heroes” at their “Voices for Wildlife” gala. Other celebrity “Wildlife Heroes” honorees included Alyssa Milano, Anderson Cooper, Lawrence Bender and Howard Ruby.

Jack was featured as a guest host of the event but then surprised when Chevy Chase awarded him with this distinction for his pioneering work in educating the public on wildlife conservation. Jack has been serving as a voice for wildlife since 1983 with his first appearance on Good Morning America. His life’s work embodies NWF’s mission “to protect wildlife for our children’s future.”

Today, Jack explores the globe as one of the most visible and respected animal ambassadors in the world. Currently he hosts Jack Hanna’s Into The Wild sponsored by the Columbus Zoo and Nationwide Insurance. Jack Hanna’s Into The Wild won a Daytime Emmy Award in 2008 and is currently nominated for its third Emmy.

The 2011 Daytime Emmy Award winners will be announced on June 17 in Los Angeles where Jack will also be a presenter. After the Daytime Emmy Awards show Jack will board an airplane and head back to Columbus for the Zoo’s annual fundraising party, and wildest summer event, Zoofari.

“It is wonderful for Jack to be recognized nationally for his efforts to educate the world on how important it is to take care of our environment,” said Dale Schmidt, President/CEO of the Columbus Zoo. “His philosophy to touch the heart to teach the mind has opened many minds to this issue and has become the mantra of the world famous Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.”

In addition to being an acclaimed author, conservationist, and director emeritus of the Columbus Zoo Jack Hanna is recognized around the country as America’s favorite zookeeper. Jack has made countless television appearances on shows such as Good Morning America, CNN’s Larry King Live, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Talk, Fox News Programs, and the Late Show with David Letterman.
