Powell, OH – The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium’s Safari Golf Club will host the second annual Jungle Jack’s Conservation Cup on Friday, September 11, 2009 with proceeds to benefit the Columbus Zoo’s Conservation Endowment Fund.

This traditional 18-hole scramble includes lunch, two hole-in-one car opportunities, raffle prizes, skill prizes and will be a completely green event by producing no waste.

Thanks to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Recycling and Litter Prevention, through the Delaware Knox Marion Morrow (DMMM) Solid Waste District the Zoo has been awarded a $10,000 grant to demonstrate special venue food waste composting. There is significant interest at the state and local level in diverting food waste (which makes up 12-15 percent of the volume at landfills) into composting and other recycling programs.

This Zoo program will launch at Jungle Jack’s Conservation Cup. The grant will support the purchase of compostable food service materials rather than petroleum based products. This means that utensils, plates, etc. would be made from corn oil, potato starch and other similar vegetable based oils.

Golfers will be able to participate in this inaugural event by eating their lunch and depositing their food scraps, utensils, plates and cups into a single container.  All the food scraps and compostable utensils will be sent to a commercial composting facility, Price Farms Organics Ltd., of Delaware, Ohio.
