Every time you step into the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, you're not just having a great time – you're also part of a movement towards sustainability that's making a real difference.

But what happens next, after you've left the zoo?

We hope you walk away feeling inspired to carry that message with you, whether you're at home, at work, or out in the community. Your support and active involvement are crucial to our success. Even small actions can have a big impact, especially when we all come together for a common cause.

Feeling curious about other ways you can help wildlife and their habitats thrive? There are plenty of options out there, and it often comes down to making informed choices. To help you get started on this journey, here are a few ideas to consider.

Be Mindful of Chemicals

Be Mindful of Chemicals

Oxybenzone is a common chemical found in sunscreen, and it is harmful to coral. Use sunscreens that are oxybenzone-free to help protect coral reefs, which play a critical role in the health of our planet.

Conserve Water

The less water you use, the less runoff and wastewater that eventually finds its way back into our ocean.

Find Alternatives to Single-Use Plastic

Plastics, predominantly plastic straws and plastic water bottles, are a major contributor to ocean pollution, endangering sea life such as turtles, seals, and birds. Their widespread use poses a threat to marine ecosystems and wildlife globally.

Keep it clean

Keep it Clean

You may be in the habit of picking up your own trash, but have you considered carrying away the trash that others have left behind? Plastic trash injures and kills manatees and other aquatic animals.

Purchase Sustainable Products

Unsustainably farmed palm oil requires that forests are cleared to create large oil palm plantations which destroys precious forest habitat that orangutans and other species need. Sustainable palm oil production follows environmental standards to keep the orangutans’ forest habitat healthy. Download the Sustainable Palm Oil Shopping app (available in Google Play or the App Store) to identify which companies use sustainable palm oil and support protecting wildlife.

recycle

Recycle

This is the first step that each of us can take to make a change. Find out what you can recycle in your community and make recycling part of your lifestyle. Even garbage from inland landfills can reach the ocean. Does your school or work place have a recycling program? If not, consider starting one!

Recycle Your Cell Phones

Recycle your cell phone to save gorilla and elephant habitats! Coltan, used in electronics, is mined only in the Congo region of Africa. Drop off old electronics at the Zoo entrance to participate in Gorillas on the Line, an movement that helps to preserve wildlife habitats.
