Featured Species

African forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis)

These elephants live in small family groups of up to 8, consisting of females and their offspring. Their search for food and water often brings them close to human populations, which can pose a challenge for both species.

Conservation Status: Critically Endangered, populations are decreasing

Threats

  • Poaching for their ivory tusks
  • The direct loss and fragmentation of their habitat
  • Conflict with humans when their ranges overlap

Firefly

Firefly populations are thought to be declining worldwide. We can help these bioluminescent insects by creating habitat for them and eliminating the use of pesticides in our own backyards. Baby fireflies live underground in damp soil, so leaving leaf litter in part of your yard can create a great space for them to grow up.

Threats

  • Habitat loss and degradation
  • Light pollution
  • Pesticide use
  • Climate change

Conservation in Action

International Elephant Foundation

International Elephant Foundation (IEF) supports and operates elephant conservation and education programs in elephant native range countries. Their programs focus on elephant management, protection, and research. In 2021, IEF was involved in many projects that protected African and Asian elephants worldwide. In addition to providing funds, the Zoo was represented on the IEF Board.

Center for Species Survival: Asian Elephants

The IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC), the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI), and the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium (CZA) have joined forces in a unique partnership to establish a new Center for Species Survival (CSS) in India, focused on Asian elephants.
