Whether you’re a novice or a seasoned golfer, there are some basics EVERY golfer will always need to know.

And with the warmer temperatures here, it’s time to brush up on your swing and call some friends to meet you at the links.

Here are top 8 things every golfer will always need to know (not in any particular order).

  1. Square up – Your stance is one of the main foundations of a good golfer. Make sure your feet are shoulder width apart with your knees bent in an athletic position.
  2. Don’t neglect your putting – Some golf pros will say the most important skill to have when playing is being able to putt. Putting is all about tempo.
  3. Work on your grip – The most important part of the golf swing is your grip. There are three main grips: the interlocking, the Vardon and the baseball — decide with your grip is best for you.
  4. Aim for the center of the green and not the flag.
  5. Tee it forward – This is important for all golfers. Most courses have a number of different tee boxes. Play the right ones for your ability, when you’re starting out, that means teeing if forward.
  6. Have a short memory – Not everyone can play like Jack Nicklaus or Tiger Woods – even they have bad shots. Don’t dwell on the negative, readjust and keep playing.
  7. Etiquette – This game has been around since the 15th century and has some rules to abide by: Every course has their own guidelines, familiarize yourself with the rules before you arrive. The PGA has a list of golf etiquette tips to review. Always respect your playing partners and golfers around you.
  8. Have fun! –Remember it’s just a game and you’re supposed to have fun. Enjoy your surroundings, the company you’re with and have a good time.
