There are days when a walk feels like a chore… and then there are days when your steps take you past elephants, under the wings of an African grey parrot, and into a story much bigger than yourself.
Welcome to walking at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.
Spanning 580 acres, the Columbus Zoo is one of the largest in North America. And if you’ve ever glanced at your step counter mid-visit, you already know this place quietly turns a casual stroll into a full-on fitness win.
Walk the entire Zoo, and you’ll cover close to four miles. That’s roughly 8,000 - 10,000 steps, depending on your route! Add in a stroll through Adventure Cove or a visit next door to Zoombezi Bay, and you’re stacking even more movement into your day.
And here’s the beautiful part: You’re moving your body AND giving your mind a break, your family a shared experience, and your day a little more wonder.
Why Walking Here Feels So Good
Walking is one of the simplest ways to support your health, and it comes with a long list of benefits backed by organizations like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Regular walking can help:
- Improve heart health
- Boost mood and reduce stress
- Increase energy levels
- Support weight management
- Strengthen muscles and joints

At the Columbus Zoo, those benefits come with a side of fresh air, curiosity, and connection. Your eyes are off your phone or smart watch and are now watching a giraffe stretch across the horizon or a sea lion glide through the water.
Three Shorter Walks Within the Zoo
Not every visit needs to be a full 4-mile adventure. Whether you’re visiting with kids, easing back into a routine, or just want a focused path, these routes offer a great way to get moving.
1. A Scenic One-Mile Journey. Start at the entrance and make your way through North America Trek, Polar Frontier, and Heart of Africa before hopping on the shuttle back. You’ll log about 1 mile, or roughly 2,300 steps, with a little bit of everything along the way.
2. A Quick Loop through Asia Quest. If you explore every animal habitat in Asia Quest, you’ll complete a ¼ mile loop, about 600 steps. Step inside the indoor habitats to see species like flying foxes and langurs, and you’ll add even more distance without even noticing.
3. The West Side Wander. Head west and explore Congo Expedition along with Australia and the Islands. This route covers about ½ mile, or roughly 1,200 steps, and offers a relaxed pace with plenty to see.

Know Before You Go
A great walk starts with a little planning.
- Dress for the weather. Most of the Columbus Zoo is outdoors, though indoor spaces are available throughout your visit.
- Wear comfortable walking shoes. Your feet will thank you halfway through your adventure.
- If you’re visiting with little ones, a stroller or wagon can make the day smoother. Just keep an eye out for designated stroller parking areas.
- Take breaks when you need them. Conservation Lake is lined with bright red Adirondack chairs, and seating areas are tucked throughout the Zoo.

Let Our Mobile App Guide Your Adventure
Think of the Zoo’s free mobile app as your personal trail guide.

It can help you:
- Find the shortest routes between habitats
- Locate indoor spaces and dining options
- Customize your visit based on the animals you most want to see
It’s available for both Apple and Android devices. Keep your Bluetooth and wi-fi on while you’re here, and you may get real-time notifications about animal presentations and nearby experiences.
Make It Part of Your Routine
For many guests, a Zoo visit isn’t a once-in-a-while outing. It’s part of their daily rhythm.

Zoo members often visit regularly to get their steps in, especially in the morning. You’ll see familiar faces, strollers rolling by, and groups walking together at a steady pace. It’s a routine that feels less like exercise and more like a shared ritual.
Kick It Up a Notch and Run Wild!
If you’re ready to trade your walking shoes for running shoes, there’s an experience that takes everything you love about the Columbus Zoo and adds a finish line. The
Run Wild 5K, presented by OhioHealth, invites you to run, walk, and explore your way through the Zoo before celebrating with a splash at Zoombezi Bay’s Wild Tides wave pool.
The race kicks off on July 12, 2026, at 8:00 a.m., and participants receive same-day admission to both the Zoo and Zoombezi Bay.

This wildly popular 5K does more than get your heart pumping. It directly supports the Zoo’s most pressing needs, from animal care and habitat improvements to education programs that inspire the next generation.
Every step you take helps advance a mission rooted in something bigger: Empowering People. Saving Wildlife.
By participating, you’re supporting exceptional care for the animals who call the Zoo home while helping create meaningful experiences for guests from around the world.
And that impact reaches far beyond a single morning.
Whether you’re counting steps, chasing a fitness goal, or simply looking for a new way to spend time together, the Columbus Zoo offers a path that feels a little different.
You come for a walk.
You leave with something more.
