When summer temperatures climb, many of us look for air conditioning, a cold drink, or a shady spot to cool off. The animals at the Columbus Zoo have plenty of ways to beat the heat, too.
Every habitat at the Zoo is thoughtfully designed around the needs of the animals that live there. Whether a species naturally comes from the deserts of Africa, the forests of Asia, or the icy Arctic, Animal Care professionals provide a variety of choices that help each individual stay comfortable, healthy, and active throughout the summer.
Choice is One of the Most Important Tools
Just like people, animals don't all respond to heat the same way.
One of the most important parts of animal wellbeing is giving animals choices. Throughout the Zoo, animals can decide where they want to spend their time based on what feels best to them. Many species have access to both indoor and outdoor spaces throughout the day, allowing them to move between sunshine, shade, and climate-controlled areas whenever they choose.
Some animals surprise even the people who care for them every day. Red pandas, for example, have access to air-conditioned nesting boxes, but they may still choose to relax high in the trees instead. Their behavior helps Animal Care staff understand how each individual prefers to use its habitat.
Built for Comfort
Every habitat includes features that help animals stay cool while encouraging natural behaviors.
Depending on the species, those features may include:
- Natural shade from trees and landscaping
- Covered areas throughout the habitat
- Pools, streams, waterfalls, and other water features
- Misting systems or cooling fans
- Climate-controlled indoor spaces
- Deep pools and sand piles for animals like elephants
These spaces allow animals to regulate their body temperature in ways that are natural for their species.
Enrichment with a Cool Twist
Summer enrichment often comes with a refreshing bonus.
Keepers provide special treats and activities designed to encourage exploration while helping animals cool down. Depending on the species, that may include:
- Large ice blocks to investigate or play with
- Frozen fruits, vegetables, fish, or other favorite foods
- Ice cubes scattered throughout habitats
- Chilled enrichment items that encourage natural foraging and play
Polar bears may enjoy playing with ice before taking a swim in their pool, while elephants can cool off with a splash in the water or by tossing sand onto their backs.
Animal Care Doesn't Stop When Temperatures Rise
Ohio's weather can be unpredictable, and preparing for hot weather begins well before the forecast potentially feels like triple digits.
Animal Care teams monitor weather conditions closely and adjust daily routines as needed. Throughout the day, the teams regularly observe every animal, making sure they remain comfortable and have access to all the resources they need.
Because every species has different needs, care plans are tailored specifically for each animal. Some species naturally thrive in hot climates, while others receive extra cooling opportunities when temperatures climb.
See Summer in Action!
A hot day at the Zoo offers plenty of opportunities to watch fascinating animal behaviors. You might see sea lions swimming laps, a capybara wading in a shallow pool, or a gorilla enjoying a frozen treat prepared by its keepers.
Every cooling opportunity, enrichment item, and habitat feature is part of a carefully planned approach to animal wellbeing. Even during the hottest days of summer, the Columbus Zoo's Animal Care team works every day to ensure each animal has the choices and resources needed to stay healthy, comfortable, and thrive.
