For Lou Koester, her connection to the Columbus Zoo started with something personal—a bench placed in honor of her parents. “I saw the benches there, and I thought I wanted something to praise my mom and dad,” she recalled. “Every time we go there, we try to find it.”

What began as a single act of remembrance evolved into a lasting legacy of support. Over the past 10 years, Lou has generously contributed to initiatives that help connect guests of all ages to wildlife, including one of her favorite features—viewing windows. “To be able to say that I did this so that the kids can see...I like that it is made available for them,” she shared.

Whether watching children marvel in awe at the animals moving through their habitat or simply observing the joy and wonder around her, Lou finds meaning in seeing how others experience the Zoo. “Seeing the different animals and watching the people, and thinking, oh my gosh, this is made available for them to be able to see,” she said. “It’s very exciting.”

Lou’s passion for the Zoo is rooted in simplicity and sincerity: a desire to give back, a joy in seeing others connect with animals, and a belief in the power of access and experience. “When you get up close to the animals, you get to see what they're really like. It’s neat,” she said. “I really like the Zoo, and it has so many things to offer.”

From a bench that honors the past to viewing windows that inspire the next generation, Lou’s gifts are a quiet but powerful reminder of how one person’s generosity can ripple outward—opening hearts, sparking wonder, and helping create a future where wildlife and people thrive together.
